The "3D list" Dec. 8
By Daniel R. Gould
Well, there was a computer problem at the library. Today, Wednesday, when I would do the copy editing for this week's 3D List, I couldn't find the file. I asked for help. It turned out that the file had been erased Tuesday.
So, I must rewrite the 3D List for Week #15. What it means to you, the reader, is that it will be late this week...and probably incomplete.
The introduction, I wrote yesterday, was to alert you to the fact that the first half of the Amsterdam Art Season 2007-2008 is now nearly half over. So soon! It was only yesterday that we were frolicing in the warm September sun.
I also advised that this is the season to give a little happiness to a loved one, someone you appreciate, a fellow worker and/or client. And what better way to show your love, whom you treasure, whom you value and you whom owe thanks to than with a gift of ART. It needn't be anything extravagant nor for that matter expensive. Last weekend I saw original art for as low as 72.50 euro.

Museum Reviews: Huis Marseille, Jacqueline Hassink
What You Missed Last Week:
What Is Happening This Week:
BITS & PIECES:
The Rijksakademie opened their doors to the outside world last weekend. For two days the doors were open to the ateliers of an international collection of young artist. There was much to been seen. Unfortunately, there was an overabundance of video and photographic work; however that is true of today's gallery scene as well.
I talked with the director, Janwillem Schrofer, and voiced my disappointment that there were so few painters and people making drawings. He told me "Wait until next year!" he said that they had accepted six painters to join the program for the next term and that with the six now in residency and that adds up to twelve. Can't wait...
There was a "performance" at 23:00. .I emphasize "performance" because it was not what I had expected. Actually, I never know what to expect when the word "performance" is used since it covers everything and then some. This was the case here. What we got was an elderly diva who sang four arias accompanied by a grand piano. There were perhaps a hundred or more people in attendance and when the final note was warbled, the soloist received a standing ovation that went on for several minutes. Not what you would expect from a group of people weaned on rap and MTV.
***
I'm sorry that I got this invite too late to include it on last week's 3D
List: Fred Beckmans, "Aardappeloverleg" at De Nieuwe Anita, the invitation made this note: "World's Worst Artist!"

MUSEUM REVIEWS:
Huis Marseille's (Keizersgracht 401) new exhibition is titled "The Power Show" and is the work of Jacqueline Hassink who is Dutch but lives in New York City. Actually, there are two shows for her in the Netherlands. The other is at the Nederlands Fotomuseum in Rotterdam (Wilhelminakade 332; www.nederalndsfotomuseum.nl <http://www.nederalndsfotomuseum.nl/> ).
According to the liner notes she "...is interested in the way in which economic power is staged, particularly in the environments that confirm power and make its pursuit possible." She concentrates on "the concept of public versus private, or outside as opposed to inside."
There is a series of Japanese interior and exterior architectural photos which capture the linear quality and the elegance of its simplicity. "Arab Domains" is a series of diptych photos of the interiors of Arab offices and meeting rooms.
Her photos illustrate the backdrop of these individualistic societies minus the people. The technique is impeccable. Until 24th February.

Saturday:
Zhuang Hong Yi showed at Galerie R. Katwijk (Leidesdwarsstraat 198) He makes large collages (80x100 cms; 190x146 cms.) constructed from what looks like Chinese wrapping paper; the type used to package fire works. A few of the collages are made from garish colored paper and others from dark blue and purple paper. One that stands out looks like a wreath of roses and, of course, is made of rose colored paper. Two paintings are abstract/expressionistic in style. Until 22nd December.

There is a group show at Wetering Galerie (Lange Lijnbaansgracht 288). Jan van der Pol exhibits representationial style paintings with an impressionistic tilt. The brush strokes are swift and actually rather sloppy, but that doesn't really matter. (60x80 cms; 195x165 cms @ 5,900
euro.)
Arie Berkulin hangs water colors that are abstract and have a flavour of Geritt Benner in both colors and composition. (72x58 cms @ 1,500 euro.)
Paul den Hollander is a photographer who photographs plant life. But these
beautiful photos---while representational---also have a subliminal abstract
quality. Edition: 10; 85x85 cms @ 2,500 euro.)
Marc Nagtzaam makes very unusual conceptual drawings in pencil. They tend to
be linear and modular and very simple in concept; what is complex about them
is the amount of time they must have taken to execute. Nice work. (35x28.5
cms @ 90; 66x53 cms @ 1,750 euro.) Until "22nd December en 9 t/m 26th
January 2008." www.weteringgalerie.nl <http://www.weteringgalerie.nl/>

Woody van Amen, a hold over from the 60s Dutch Pop School scene, is showing
his latest work at Galerie Witteveen (Keizersgracht 538). The style, now,
is a mix of the representational combined with symbols, abstract forms,
calligraphy with a strong element of green in various shades and hues. There
is also a continuity in forms and compositions. Most paintings have a square
which frames a landscape painting and it is the background that contains the
other elements. One large canvas also incorporates neon. (110x150 cms @
20,000 euro). Others: 53x64 cms @ 2,500 euro; 60x90 cms @ 6,000 euro.)
Until 29th December. www.galeriewitteveen.nl

At Mart house (Prinsengracht 529) Esmי Valk hangs a large drawing that is
figurative, abstract and a lot more. 3,800 euro. Tiki Postman created a
drawing installation consisting of nearly 500 10x10 cms drawings of a pencil
sharpener. The imagery ranges from representational to nearly abstract to
conceptual; 2,800 euro for all. Isi Kunath makes very unusual collages. She
adds typography which helps define the imagery. 800 euro. And there are a
few more artists as well. www.marthouse.nl <http://www.marthouse.nl/>

Masao Yamamoto exhibits at Galerie Gabriel Rolt (Elandsgracht 35). The front
gallery is an installation of photographs on each of the two side walls. The
way he hangs the small photos is both linear and in a modular form of
composition. From a distance we see a "whole" piece consisting of b/w and
gray contrasts. Up close, the photos are detailed and the subject matter
truly eclectic; some of them are about one-by-two cms.
How does he select the subject matter? He told me that he always carries a
camera with him. He purposely avoids any one subject matter. Sometimes, he
will carry a printed snapshot in his pocket so as to add "dimension" to it.
(Installation: 33 works @ 7,500 euro; eight works @ 2,700 euros; single
photographs in an edition of 40 @ 750 to 3,500 euros.) Until 5th January.

Galerie Fons Welters (Bloemstraat 140) exhibits the artists of the gallery
in a group show. Eylem Aladogan's pencil on paper...well, I can't describe
these linear, conceptual, representational drawings in words...you gotta see
them...
Calire Harvey showed at the Rijksakademic about two years ago. I liked her
paintings, in their infinite shades of gray, immediately on seeing them for
the first time. So did Fons; she had her first exhibition some months later
at the gallery. Here she has done the same thing differently. There are 50
oils on glass portraits that measure four-by-three cms titled "50 Heads Up"
@ 15,000 euro. At the entrance, to the gallery, there are about 100 boxes
filled with sand and a few with small paintings on glass. Nice.
Gabriel Lester shows a series of photos that appeared to have been taken in
bad light and certain forms take on a monumental perception. 1,300 euro.
Berend Strik continues to evolve and reinvent his style and technique. The
work here is exceptional and his fans will not be disappointed. 108x101 cms
@ 10,500 euro. Alex Winters b/w acrylic line drawings on canvas are linear
and captivating to the eye. (150x200 cms @ 5,000 euro.) Until 2nd February
2008. www.fonswelters.nl <http://www.fonswelters.nl/>

There is a new gallery in Amsterdam: Ververs (Hazenstraat 54). This was the
first show that I attended. On entering the gallery, to the left where
hanging a series of photographs of familiar Amsterdam scenes: Central
Station, the Shell Building, the prison near Amstel Station, etc. What made
these works unusual was the fact that the artist has drawn and written over
the imagery. It creates a tension that challenges your ability to maintain
eye control. The artist titles the series "Monuments of Time," and says it
is about the grown up world as opposed to the children's world.
On the opposite wall is a series of photos of dolls or children. The frame
is made to allow the glass to be about two or three cms from the back photo.
On the glass is another image that is like a shadow. One profile was the one
an only Mickey Mouse.
Since I could find no attribution for the artist, I sought out the gallery
owner to ask for an introduction. Much to my surprise, Angeliek Ververs,
said "It's my work." She also hangs several small lithos and whatnots by a
whole range of 20th century artists: Appel, Chagall, Cocteau, Matisse,
Warhol, etc. Until 19th January 2008. http://verversgallery.blogspot.com

Tom Mason opened at GMVZ (Prinsengracht 276) with a collection of witty
imagery. It is a conceptual show that in some ways appears to be
"autobiographical" but that may not be accurate. There are six strips drawn
on the gallery's corner wall---three to a wall---which mirrors the other
side with the same message like: "Imagine the bitch naked" and "Imagine the
money I'll make." What does it all mean? I asked the artist: "Maybe
nothing!" I see, okay...Also, there are 23 pieces that form an installation
and reflect several styles and techniques: comic strip, linear, collage,
photography, etc. Until 12th January 2008. www.gmvz.com

ABC Treehouse sponsors a group show with a percentage of the selling price
to be donated to War Child. It was a very good group exhibition. Marlijn
Franken hangs two pieces titled "Silhouet" (170x40 cms @ 750 euro) that look
like form fitting dresses.
My favourite street poet Laser 3,14 has several pieces on display. At the
entrance were four "philosophical paintings" with the following
observations: "The cobwebs in your head." "Why All These Flawed Gods?" "How
the Abject Ate The Christians," and "Lindberg Flew the Ocean." On the top
floor there are mixed media drawings and about 20+ 15x15 cms cubes which
contain eight different pithy sayings by Laser @ 325 euros.
Peter Vlat makes nice drawings, but, unfortunately, the subject matter is
rather depressing: a crashed plane; a derailed locomotive; a tank...A3 @ 225
euro. Victoria Jacob does good photograph work that has a touch of surreal
style to the imagery. (50x70 cms @ 330 euro). Marquis Palmer also does
photography that is representational but with a mysterious quality to it.
(30x40 cms @135.)
Meta Joanknecht makes ceramic dishes/bowls with beautiful
linear/typographical designs on an unusual rough surface. (295 to 750 euro.)
Marjet Wessels Boer makes hand made felt lamps that look like big
snowballs. Only 72.50 euro. Jack Allick has taken five 20x20 cms abstract
paintings and groups them vertically: 100x20 cms @ 450 euro. Also he
grouped four 20x20 paintings as a square, 350 euro. Nice work. I really
liked the "stick" people. There were four pieces each resembling a human but
in elongated form and brightly painted by "Storypeople" and each one had a
short story lettered on the torso of the stick person. Nice. 200 euro:
(www.storypeople.com <http://www.storypeople.com/> ) Gunilla Andersson
"Fused" are mixed media wall sculptured pieces that are lighted and framed
with a sheet of metal. 30x17 cms @ 150 euro.
The price list includes the amount of the cost that will be donated to War
Child. The Percentages are 10 to 20% with one exception: Gunilla Andersson
will give 100% from the sale of one of her pieces. I asked the curator if it
was a typographical error. "No!" That's nice! Until 13th January.

WALLS art (Prinsengracht 737) presents 20 young artists under the title
"Great Winter Art Hunt." It is a good collection of work. Amelieke v/d
Lavoir's work reminded me of German Expressionistic woodblocks and it is
meant as a compliment. (30x23 cms @ 200 euro.) Marieke Peters does silk
screens on wood with a nice effect. (19x17 cms @ 250 euro; 32x19 cms @ 300
euro.) Brigette Kleiberg paints very colourful canvases of giraffes,
elephants and pelicans. The work has something; the colors become
abstractions within the figurative. (80x120 cms @ 1,250 euro.) Luke Fazaat
took over 5,000 small photographs (about one-by-one-and-one-half cms) and
mounted them as one huge collage measuring 120x160 cms. Nice, and it was
already sold.
Efthimin Patrikios is a photographer with the skills required of an
advertising bureau. His work is meticulous and everything---color,
composition, lighting, etc---is perfect. (80x120 cms @ 1,250 euro.)
Elizabeth Koning does mixed media photography. It is a very special imagery
and excellent technique. (50x50 cms @ 1,250 euros.) Sharon Overmers does
ink on paper drawings. All are "portraits" of ladies but done in a comic
strip like style. (30x40 cms @ 180 euro.)
Merian van Rooijen's "Blinddruk" is minimalisme at its best. The piece is
white monochromic, in fact the imagery is embossed into the paper. Edition
5; 80x100 cms @ 1,350.) Silvia Copray has made 16 charcoal drawings
featuring people riding in a car or in groups. The only thing missing are
captions and then we would have a very good cartoon series. (20x25 cms @ 160
euro.) Anouk van Tetering does photos of fruit, nuts and onions but in a
very unusual way. These are unique images of these common foods. Good work.
(ed. 25, 55x50 cms @ 265 euro.) Tessa de Guyenaer makes cushions and bags.
They are all in b/w and shades of gray. The designs are linear and abstract.
Cushions: 50x50 cms @ 70 euro; 100x100 cms @ 158 euro; Bags: small @ 78
euro; medium @ 90 euro; and big @ 155 euro.) Until 2nd February.

WHAT IS HAPPENING THIS WEEK:
Reminder: A few weeks back, I had a nasty e-mail from a person I refer to
as Blubber Belly or as the Dutch call him: De Boer. He cajoled me by saying
I didn't know what I was doing; that a show I had listed DID NOT happen. I
checked the list and what did I see?: This: (?). Obviously, De Boer isn't
very bright or he would have known by the (?) that my source was not one
that I consider to be reliable. The "*" after the time given, for the
opening, signifies that it, too, may be wrong. When you see these symbols ,
check before you go. Don't blame 3D!!!

Well, I hope that I got everything at least as far as openings go. I did not
find the notes for a few things that had been under the rubric Bits & Pieces
and there may be other things that were lost forever when they deleted
Tuesday's writings. C'est la vie.
This is probably the last busy weekend for Amsterdam's first half of the
2007-2008 art season. Have you bought any piece of art as of yet? Now is
the time! Make an artist's---not to mention his/her's family's---Christmas.
It is so easy to do...so, DO IT!!!
...And tell them 3D put you up to it. What time does the sled leave?
