The 3d List week 33 by Daniel R. Gould. Amsterdam art, galleries and museums
Aaaah...it was a nice weekend. Not many openings, but enough to satisfy the aesthetic soul. The brevity of the schedule meant it was possible to linger at an opening and enjoy the work to its full extent. That was nice. Maybe the Amsterdam Gallery Association should make a plan that regulates the number of openings on any given Saturday---the really busy day of the artistic weekend---so that one can gallery-hop at leasure.
What's that I hear? The Amsterdam Gallery Association, you say, "Never heard of it!" Nor has 3D. Of course, such a concept would be impossible owing to the fact that every gallery holder not only wants to be completely independent but always unique. Somethings just can't be organized, nor should they be; but it does happen from time-to-time. Art fairs are a good example. Come September, there will be, more than likely, 25 to 40 openings on the first Saturday. An orgy of art. But let us close out this season before starting another. And talking about closing it out, well, the end is near. That means it is time to reflect on what you have bought this season. If "nothing" is the answer, well how sad for you! Since you receive the 3D List you are considered to be an art lover; and from what direction you come to that like artist, collector, curator, journalist, etc doesn't matter. What matters is that you support art and an aritst basically two ways: Encouragement and Financially. Let's see more of the latter. Last weekend was not one filled with red dots. Pity!

BITS & PIECES:
Sometimes, at an opening, someone will comment to 3D: "This is bad 'art! It stinks'" My reply can be summed up with something I read recently. A man and woman enter a closed room and they are met with a strong odor. The woman says, "What is that bad smell?" The man answers, "Well, it's either bad meat or good cheese!" And that's the way it is with art.

Don´t believe everything you read! Especially on food packages. "The Worst Packaged Food Lies," "Learn the truth behind food labels and never be fooled by misleading marketing again." How do the food processing companies mislead you into thinking their product is healthy? or "This is Good For You?"
Here is a good example. Pick up a package of candy and it says in BIG letters "Fat Free." Yeah, sure is, but it is also nearly 100% sugar with chemical flavoring added. More at www.msn.com

SPECIAL HAPPENING: The Hulda Festival (Oosterdok, at NEMO Science Musuem) from 8th to 17th May.
"The Turkish Connection"
They have been dubbed the "guest workers" across Europe. Those "aliens" from a different culture that just don't seem to fit it. Fifty years ago this may have been an accurate description, but today it is no longer true. Since their "invasion" of Western Europe they have borne children and now have grand children. Their offsprings, more often than not, have assimilated into the society they were born into. They have not only become musician performing jazz to rap to classical and everything in between; but artist, architects and designers too.
The Hulda Festival is an exhibition celebrating the work of Ilhan Koman (1921-1986) who can only be ethnically identified as Turkish/Swedish. And his work has been inspired more by the Nordic element than the Mediterranean. This is a "show on the road." It will be presented in 10 ports-of-call from Stockholm to Istanbul. Amsterdam is the second stop after the inaugural exhibition in his "home" country. And there is a very personal element to it, it is on a ship that was built in 1905 and renovated by Koman in 1965. It was both his home and his studio.
He was a sculpture who was greatly influenced by such artists as Rodin, Giacometti and Brancuse. And there was another major influence and that was Leomardo Da Vinci. This "mentor" unified Koman's approach to art not only from the aesthetic but also the scientific direction. Da Vinci was artist, inventor, engineer and designer. Koman emulates all these factors and, in the last 15 years of his life, worked to create "new geometric forms."
These new forms often create an illusion of motion whether the material is wood, metal or plastic. The forms range from the linear to conic. The linear is manifested in wood pieces which play with the intrinsic nature of the material to not only mold the form but to maintain the new shape as well. On display is a 1:3 scale model of "Akdeniz" thats shape is intended to create an optical illusion reflecting the wave action of a sea like The Mediterranean. It is formed by 114 linear metal strips in parallel.
The exhibition is on the deck of his ship. You are invited and encouraged to "play" with some of the pieces like the "Rolling Lady" which is housed in a box on a slant. Move the object to the top and it will "roll" down the incline in a straight line that is almost unimaginable considering it irregular conic shape. Finally, there is an inner purity to his designs which always make them appear to be both monumental and elegant.
During the festival there are 10 youth workshops on offer and ALL free of charge as is the show itself. Tuesday through Sunday, 10-17:00. The Amsterdam segment has been organized by De Levante Gallery. More info: www.delevante.org and www.koman.org
His work is represented in museum collections from Stockholm to Instanbul; from Paris to New York to Seattle and many places inbetween.
WHAT YOU MISSED LAST WEEK:
Friday:
MLB (Witte de Withstraat 32). Marcelo de Melo (Brazil) sums up the meaning of his exhibition as being about "the vulnerablitity of life." An the show is an installation with perhaps a couple of themes. The most obvious could be airplanes and air travel. These two simple factors have now become vehicles for terrorism. The airplane has become a new weapon in the arsenal of the terrorist. On the floor of the gallery---and measuring four by four meters---is a red taped outline of a large plane. On the walls there are several collages all of which has been formulated using ephemera associated with air travel: boarding passes; baggage destination sticker; seat number tages; etc. In one corner there are about 50 latex planes in a pile. However none of these things conjure up fear. It is his mosaic work that make things ominous: Hand grenades and small hand held rockets. "Burn Out" is the title of a video in which an airplane made from wax burns. Another object demands close scrutiny. It is an airplane, that seems obvious, until we see nails placed in strategic locations that echo where the nails were placed on the Jesus cross. (Collages from 150 to 300 euro; mosaics from 1,500 to 3,000 euro.) Until 30th May.

Saturday:
Femke Teussink is at Galerie Rademakers (Prinsengracht 570) with photographs. The common theme that runs through each piece is that of a young girl or a young woman pictured in a watery environment. How she puts these two subject matters together is what gets your attention. The subjects are all posed and they are all dressed in white. Indirectly, the landscape is also a feature, however it is downplayed since it appears vaguely as a darkened backgound. (All phots 80x120 cms., in an edition of 7; @ 2,400 euro.)
***
Jaune Amigó (Spain) is at Galerie R. Kaiwijk (Lange Leidsedwarstraat 198). His work is best described as geometric abstraction against an expressionistic background. For the most part everything is in b/w, gray and, from time to time, a touch of red clay color has been added. The abstraction part is linear parallel lines. His sculpture work consists of simple forms from 50 to 100 cms., long with metal struts---covered with Japanese rice paper---to maintain the shape. (Sculpture, 59x16x16 cms., @ 1,400 euro; 92x15x15 cms., @ 2,000; 38x61 cms., acyrlic on linen @ 1,400 euro; mixed media on linene 162x130 cms., @ 4,900 euro.) Until 30th May. www.galerierogerkatwijk.nl

De Witte Voet (Kerkstraat 135) is showing the work of Martin Smith (England). This is an interesting exhibition because it is one theme presented in two forms. One form is represented by prints where he uses a linear geometric configuration which is repeated in different dimensions. On one wall is a set of these circular prints consisting of 47 parts. There is a selection of three that are offered singly. On a long table there are five ceramic circular doughnut like forms. Each has a bottom that reflect the linear geometric forms he has done on paper. (Print @ 220 euro; set of 47 @ 10,340 euro; ceramic work @ 5,000 euro.) Until 3rd June. www.galeriedewittevoet.nl

Sandra Derks is a painter and the subject matter doesn't really make a difference since her work is all about painting. At this show, at "witzenhausen GALLERY" (Hazenstraat 60), we see a series of three paintings featuring trees and one is hanging up-side down. The point is simple: This is all about composition and form; the imagery is secondary. Even color takes a backseat; in fact, none of the three features a tree with green leaves. Afterall, you have seen an artist's interpretation of trees for the last 500 years. What Derks does is to emphasiize the abstract qualities of the subject matter and she does it in b/w and gray and in another red against a brown background. Another work is nearly monochromatic with what looks like a reddish/pink smoke haze over a linear grid and down in the lower left hand corner is a minute human figure. (All 100x185 cms., @ 7,000 euro.) Until 30th May. www.witzenhausengallery.nl

"Complex Interiors Trance-lucent Concrete" is the title for Jennifer Tee's exhibition at Galerie Fons Welters (Bloemstraat 140). Tee takes the concept of sculpture work into her own spcial realm. It is unique; sometimes dramatic and even whimsical. The latter is examplified in two pieces each with a focal point of an ordinary chair. What gets your attention is what appears to be a human arm. In one, the chair rest on the arm and in the other the hand of the arm grips a leg of the chair.
Two very large pieces hang from the ceiling and there is an ethnographic feel to each. They seem to reflect a South Pacific culture with porcelain forms hanging from a hexagon wooden structure. There is a floor based sculpture that resembles a cats-cradle that you make from string. In this instance, the "string" is wooden struts that are connected with heavy twine. This elaborate construction sits on a black painted floor space with two black objects resting on it. (59x86 cms., Epson aquarelle print on Dibond, Ed. 7; 1,200 euro; 280x140x120 cms., 20 porcelain feathers, wooden hexagon construction @ 15,000 euro; 300x4.5x4.5 cms., each p+ rope, paper floor protea flower 220x300x1225 @ 8,000 euro.) A beautifully designed book from her Stedelijk Museum exhibtion is available at 25 euro.
At the PLAYSTATION section of the gallery is the work of Alexander Ernst Voigt (German). His large canvases are busy. He combines styles from representational to geomteric abstract or expressionism. Voigt integrates these styles onto the canvas and sort of into a composition. Sometimes the representational is contrasted by a minimal nothingness. (24x30 cms., oil, @ 500; 170x200 cms., oil and acrylic @ 3,700 euro; 190x120 cms., oil and acrylic @ 4,000 euro.) Until 6th June. www.fonswelter.nl

De Appel since leaving its former location has gone on the road. The present location is a small room at the Brouwersgracht 196 where De Appel first began life in 1974. The show itself breaks with a tradition for what is essentially an art space. In collaboration with Witte de With and the auction house Christie's Amsterdam there will be on the 20th of May an auction of the work on display. De Appel does not sell art, but subsidy cuts over the last three or four years has left it sorely in need of funds to continue. So this exhibition is mounted from several different angles: It is "a project that takes place within the framework of the auction, and questions the valuation of art. At what moment is the value of art created? When a work exists as an idea? When it is produced, presented or sold?" In addition, "The auction will hence be deployed not only as a fundraising instrument, but also as a means of addressing the current value systems within the art world."
That was what the press released said. What you see is an unusual exhibition that uses the title "Take the Money and Run" as both its theme and inspiration, in a sense. Nearly all of the 26 particiapaing artists have expressed themselve typographically. Some have written funny statements; some are serious---maybe; some pointed and some that seem unrelated like that from Marlene Dumas: "I, Marlene Dumas, hereby solemnly declare that I will try to give you pleasure forever. But as I know (and you know) that in the past I, as many before me, have failed time and again. I see no really good reason why I should succeed this time. Yours Sincerely. M. Dumas." Enough said. Until12th May. www.deappel.nl

Sunday:
In is reunion time! PS (Leidsekade 60) has broke all presedance with a show titled "Later on........redux." The four artists showing is repeating another group show which they organized in Mallorca for a museum space consisting of 1,400 square meters. But what is new for PS is that three of the artist are Dutch. In its 10 years history the gallery had not---until now---showed a Dutch artist. With that said...on to the show...
Often 3D comments that you should expect minimalism when you attend an exhibition here. And, often, the only thing minimal about the work is the imagery into which a considerable amount of work has been extended to create the illusion of minimalism. The most minimal piece in this show is by the gallery holder Jan van der Ploeg who has "WALL PAINTING No. 263" painted---where else---but on the wall. He has painted what looks like two linear style tear drops in black and yellow. They are between two windows and depending on where the sun is depends on what you see. Not for sale unless you are interested in buying the whole house.
Han Schuil hangs a geometric abstract painting which is both simple and busy. The simple part is in blue, yellow and white and occupies 2/3rds of the composition. The remaining third is a linear explosion of color which is manifested like a fan. The piece is painted on metal and the corners are "folded" and appear to be in the shape of the corners of a thick rubber tarp that has been folded. (9,500 euro.) Ab van Hanegem displays a work that combines abstraction and expressionism in an unusual way. The imagery in both styles have the same color scheme of blue, green and aquamarine. But with each style the brush work is different which creates a juxtapostion that at first is hard to define and, in fact, to visualize. Nice. (6,000.)
Finally there is a "Seated Nude, semi; detail," by Tim Ayres. Well, this is a minimal figurative style since it is in only two colors, maroon and yellow-ochre. But the "nude" part is formulated by the fact that the female torso is defined by being clad in a net body sock. This defines the figure and adds another factor which is to make it a geometric abstraction as well as being figurative representational. Got it? (5,500 euro.) Four artists. Four works = very good show. A catalog from the Mallorca exhibition: "Later on we shall simplify things catalogus," @ 20 euro is available. Until 30th June. www.psprojectspace.nl

Four artists are showing a DeLavante (Hobbemastraat 28). Coskun Celik does geometric etchings. The designs are timeless as well as intricate. However his style does not carry over to the paintings which are minimal linear abstractions with both the design and color representation very simple. One canvas is red on black and another is blue on black. The linear aspect is an irregular parellelism which creates a bit of drama. (120x90 cms., @ 450 euro.) Cigdem Turek hangs three photos which are conceptual representations and focuses on color and/or form. (15x20 cms., @ 200 euro.)
Meltem Aktürk is a graphic artist. She exhibits five versions of a poster to the "Poetry International Festival." Well, posters are of special interest to 3D. I have been collecting them forever. So it is rare that I see something completely new. One way to describe these posters is to say that they have been "shaped." But that's not really accurate. What the artist has done is to make each poster in the size of A0. However, most of the imagery is confined to a space of A1. Something extends from the A1 perimeters. She then cuts out the larger and blank area and around what extends from the A1 center. This is all hand work and the poster was done for a school project and there is only one of each. Clever idea which gets the viewers attention. Also on display is a set of stationery and envelopes she has designed. All examples are very colorful and each color arragement coordinates with both the envelope and stationary. A very marketable concept.
The final artist refers to herself as STUDIO iSiZ (aka: Isil Özden) and she is hanging paintings that are monochromatic or nearly so. What she does is paint and assemble an abstract monochromtic canvas. In a sense that's an oxymoron. But Özdea does it and cleverly. "Rogue" looks like a oversized chessboard with too many squares and in reality it is a mixed media piece. Each square is an individual and miniature canvas. All squares are more or less the same shades of red and all are reconfigured into one composition. In "Mother and child" she repeats this mixed media approach, again, using small cut out squares, but this time in red shades from pink to maroon. (1,200 to 1,400 euro.) Until ___?___. www.delevante.org

WALLS (Prinsengracht 737) is showing 16 artists or more. The invite listed 15, but 3D discovered someone not listed...perhaps there were more. Minco den Heyes (the unnmentioned) hangs two b/w photos with emphasis on contrast and shadow. Nicely done. (40x60 cms., Ed. 1 @ 425 euro; 70x100 cms., Ed. 1 @ 550 euro.) Lisette Alblas does monochromatic or abstract paintings which she then cuts into strips and weaves these together creating an abstract./expressionistic piece with linear qualities. (30x40 cms., @ 150 euro; 50x70 cms., @ 330 euro; 60x80 cms., @ 500 euro.) Els van Asten does birds and two large pieces are studies in conceptual redundacy again using birds. There is a series of six small paintings all with the same imagery but each different. together they form a rhythm and a flow to the "action." (100x100 cms., @ 600 euro; 30x30 cms., 6xs @ 600 euro for all.)
Frida Badoux makes "HATBAGS." And they are accurately identified. She takes military style hats and attaches long straps and puts a top on the cap where generally you would put your head. Cute idea and very nicely priced at 95 euro. Alice Brasser paints impressionistic/expressionistic representational oils that are landscapes; and not the run-of-the-mill variety. (125x140 cms., @ 2,550 euro.) Bas Chrispijn work is mixed media with a difference. A combination of street art style (graffiti) to washes and sometimes both are conbined. The framing of some is also special where the mat is a cut out that...well, you gotta see it. (50x60 cms., @275-335 euro.) Philip de Koning does bronze and marble sculptured water fowl and fish with clean and linear lines. Nice. (Ed. 8; 1,500 to 3,750 euro.)
Marjan van Linge does contemporary impressionistic landscape. Good brush work. (100x150 cms., @ 1,125 euro.) Photographs by Silvia de Meijer are of two varieties. There are still lives that are dark and almost moody but captivating. Three others are posed featuring two with a young girl and are whimical and/or elaborately fabricated. (Ed. 5 to 10; 42x59 cms., @ 385 euro; 84x118 cms., @ 600 euro.) Hendrik Steven de Vries paints dogs to trees. But don't let that stop you. His technique is such that they look like photographs without being photo-realistic...sometimes (forgot to check prices). Albert de Wilde is an expressionist/abstractionist. One example is in b/w and the other is a kaleldoscope of colors. (80x120 cms., @ 1,750 euro.) Bart van Zweeden is an expressionist and the work is decorative. (80x100 cms., @ 950 euro.) Until 4th July. www.walls.nl
